Rockville, VA - May 8, 2009 --
TecAccess, a leader in accessibility solutions, has received the fifth annual Top Muse award by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) Muse Awards in honor of exceptional creativity in business. The awards are sponsored by the VMFA Business Council, which promotes an active dialogue between Virginia´s business community and VMFA.
"The 2009 Muse Award winners reflect the state´s economic and creative diversity," said VMFA Director Alex Nyerges. "The Muse Award competition offers the commonwealth´s business community a forum in which leaders and entrepreneurs can come together to acknowledge the major role that creativity plays in their businesses. VMFAitself a resource for creative inspiration through its collections, exhibitions and programs - is delighted to provide that forum."
The winners were selected by a panel of judges who reviewed 18 semifinalists who were winnowed from 56 applicants. Panel members were Bill Chapman, executive director of The Richmond Forum; Michael Chapman, vice presidentgroup planning director of the Martin Agency; Donna Cox, vice president for communications at MeadWestvaco; Steve Hedberg, creative director for Richmond Magazine; and Carolyn McCarty, vice president for brand marketing at Capital One.
Muse Award winners received cast-aluminum spiral trophies that are patterned after a chambered nautilus, symbolizing the natural evolution of creativity. The Muse Award sponsors and supporters for 2009 were Altria, Ampa Entertainment Inc., Boitnott Visual Communications Corporation, CXI, Comcast Spotlight, Dominion Resources, Genworth Financial, RBC Wealth Management, Richmond Magazine and the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
TecAccess CEO and founder Debra Ruh accepted the award and recognized her daughter, Sara, who has Down Syndrome, as her "muse."
"To say that TecAccess is a diverse company is an understatement," said Ruh. "We now employ more than 60 associates with a wide range of intellectual and physical disabilities, which makes us uniquely positioned to undertake the challenge of developing creative accessibility solutions for private industries, government and education. Though employment opportunities are still limited for people with disabilities, there are many technology positions that can be performed regardless of a disability."
