Manakin Sabot-April 29, 2006-- Debra Ruh, president and CEO of TecAccess LLC, the clear leader in creating accessibility solutions for Section 508 compliance, and Electronic and Information Technology (E&IT), has been chosen as a finalist for the Seventh Annual Women in Technology (WIT) Leadership Award in the Entrepreneur category. The Leadership awards will be held on May 18, 2006, at the McLean Hilton in McLean, VA.
The WIT Leadership Award recognizes women who have exemplified the WIT mission to Connect - Lead - Succeed. Finalists were chosen on their ability to balance their roles as mentors, role models, and leaders.
"This has been one of the biggest challenges of my life, but one of the most
rewarding,"said Ruh of her company, which is now known worldwide. Frequently traveling the globe to spread her message, Ruh recently traveled to Germany where she spoke before the European Union. Recognized for her expertise and tireless dedication to accessible technology abroad as well as at home, Ms. Ruh accepted an appointment to Virginia Governor Tim Kaine´s Olmstead Committee. She is also the recipient of the Department of Labor´s New Freedom Initiative Award and the SBA´s "Virginia Minority Small Business Person of the Year" Award for Region III and Richmond.
"Electronic and Information Technology´s emergence as a pivotal form of communication is important to all members of society, including people with disabilities, and it is critical that everyone is able to access this information medium," explained Ruh. "The WIT distinction is a testament to the fact that the technology arena understands and embraces the importance of including this user group, and is striving to make technology accessible and user-friendly to all - regardless of disability or age-related limitations."
As millions of people with disabilities want and need access to today´s technology, Ruh is confident that the WIT distinction will provide a platform that helps both government and private industry realize not only the socially conscious message of accessible technology, but also the valuable market share and return on investment involved in designing and utilizing technology that is accessible and Section 508 compliant.
Other finalists for the WIT awards include, but are not limited to, representatives from Cisco Systems, Department of Defense, US Postal Service, Northrop Grumman, C2 Technologies, and The Harman Group.
