Manakin Sabot-May 25, 2006-- TecAccess, the clear leader in creating accessibility solutions for Section 508 compliance, and Electronic and Information Technology (E&IT), has been instrumental in helping countless numbers of government agencies, private corporations, and educational institutions achieve Section 508 compliance.

Many Section 508 success stories are coming to the forefront as more and more entities turn towards TecAccess for their accessibility compliance needs. Yet, one story in particular manages to capture the very spirit of why Section 508 of the Americans for Disability Act was established. That story is the successful partnering of TecAccess and the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) to help the agency create its award-winning, Best Practice processes.

"Our program is considered one of the best in the Federal Government and probably the best in the United States. The program has been nominated for numerous awards and has been the subject of many different medias," said Fred DiFiore, Senior Program Manager and EIT Coordinator for the USPTO. "The success of the USPTO is not the end product of one person, but rather many. Included in that group has to be TecAccess. The accomplishments of this office are a direct reflection of Debra Ruh´s talents, dedication and professionalism. She is one of those individuals that we all desperately try to hire. She is a rare example of someone who truly puts customers first and who provides first class service. If you want to succeed, you need Debra Ruh and her talented company."

In his article, Everyone Wins with Section 508, Fred DiFiore, explains how this success stems from the USPTO´s approach to integrating Section 508 into the way it does business.

USPTO incorporated Section 508 standards into the development of its software and web based products at the beginning of the process, rather than "retrofit" products. At the USPTO, Section 508 compliance is strictly enforced. Employees and contractors are trained on how to create compliant products.

According to one private-sector program manager working with USPTO, the USPTO Section 508 program provided them for the first time with clearly defined standards for software and web development.

The USPTO program has unequivocally proven the value of Section 508. It provides enhanced benefits to the disabled and the agency. Instead of costing money, the program actually saves the Office money, results in faster and better products.

Section 508 saves the USPTO an estimated $1+ million annually in maintaining accessibility to it 61 employees with IT-related disabilities.
