Rockville, VA - October 19, 2006-- TecAccess LLC, an award-winning provider of Section 508 compliance, W3C Standards, and electronic and information technology (E&IT) accessibility solutions, has published "Making Technology Accessible" in ACUTA´s Journal of Communications Technology in Higher Education.
ACUTA´s leading journal, which is published by the Association for Communications Technology Professionals in Higher Education, promotes the value of technology in the learning experience. After a strict six-month editorial review process, made up of members of Duke University and University of Oregon, ACUTA has featured the TecAccess article as a way to explain the process in making technology accessible in the education arena.
In the article, Debra Ruh, president of TecAccess, explains, "According to the 2000 Census, more than 20 percent of the 281 million people in the United States have functional disabilities. More than 56 million people with functional disabilities in the United States earn $1.2 trillion in income and have more than $175 billion in annual discretionary income. What this means is that people with disabilities are fast becoming a very signification portion not only of the technology market, but also of the growing e- learning landscape. With increasing disposable income, advancements in assistive technology, and the desire to further their education, students with disabilities are likely to be part of your next online classroom."
TecAccess is confident that educating the higher education community to the best use of assistive technology is the next crucial step in accommodating the growing student base that includes individuals with disabilities. At this time, 95 percent of postsecondary institutions use the Web to offer distance education. TecAccess´ goal is to ensure that institutions make all of their content accessible to students with disabilities. Currently TecAccess is collaborating with such institutions as George Washington University, the University of Kansas, Oklahoma State University, and Virginia Commonwealth University to make this goal a reality.
