Rockville, VA-- January 6, 2005-- Debra Ruh, President and Founder of TecAccess, will teach a workshop at the International Conference on Technology and Persons with Disabilities in March, 2005. The workshop, entitled "Section 508 Overview and e-Learning/Multimedia Compliance Certificate Course," will be presented by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and highlights their new Section 508 certification program. TecAccess was instrumental in helping USPTO to achieve its current standard of Section 508 compliance.

USPTO created their certificate program to provide everyone who works with Section 508 a standardized approach on creating and evaluating compliant products. Attendees will learn to identify the differences between Sections 504 and 508 and their impact on individuals and organizations. They will also learn key elements for a successful Section 508 program, and ways to implement lessons learned in their respective organizations. One of the major differences between this program and others is that it is not based on theory and philosophical methods, but rather on the experiences of people who have had been working in an operational 508 program for years.

The workshop is a low-tech overview on USPTO award-winning, best practice processes. It includes their interpretation for creating compliant products that meet multimedia, self-contained/closed products, desktop and portable computers, software, and web-based standards. The workshops also address another major problem with Section 508 compliance. Just because a product is compliant does not mean that it is accessible or usable. The solutions taught in the workshops address both compliance and usability.

Based on her background, expertise, and reputation, the USPTO asked Mrs. Ruh to teach the class on creating compliant e-learning and multimedia products. To date, the workshops have only included USPTO personnel and contractors. The response to the workshops has been overwhelming. In the five weeks that the workshops were offered, over 450 people attended the courses.

USPTO recommends the workshop for federal and state employees, contractors, vendors, and academic staff. Attendees will learn which Section 508 Standards can be impacted by e-Learning, how to evaluate best practice e-Learning Courses, and step-by-step "tips" for assessing compliance.

Other instructors are Fred DiFiore, Electronic & Information Technology (E&IT) Coordinator for Sections 501/504 and 508, USPTO, and Joyce Miller, Deputy Section 508/504 Coordinator, USPTO.

The conference will be held March 14-19, 2005, at California State University at Northridge and is sponsored by the Center on Disability. It is the longest running and largest annual university sponsored conference on technology and persons with disabilities. This annual conference serves as a major training venue for professionals around the world involved in the field of disability and technology. The conference will host more than 275 sessions and feature over 175 exhibits.
