Rockville, VA-- November 2, 2004-- TecAccess, a worldwide leader in electronic and information technology (E&IT) accessibility and Section 508 solutions, has been awarded a four-year, 2.5 million dollar 8(a) contract for Assistive Technology Program Support by the Department of Education.

Under the contract, TecAccess will staff and maintain an accessibility testing laboratory and provide customer support to Department of Education employees. TecAccess will perform accessibility assessments and make specific recommendations for accessible technology solutions to meet the needs of federal employees with disabilities.

Accessible Systems of Maryland will subcontract to TecAccess to assist in delivering services to the Department of Education. The expert technical support solution provided by TecAccess adds another value-added component to a suite of services employed by the Department of Education as part of its Section 508 compliance program.

"We are pleased that the Department of Education selected TecAccess as their IT/Web accessibility solutions partner to operate and maintain their accessibility testing laboratory. The majority of our highly skilled accessibility testers are themselves disabled, employing the same type of assistive technology that we will be testing for the Department of Education. This is a perfect fit of our core business services with the agency´s requirements for fully accessible and Section 508-compliant technology solutions," said Mac McCuller, Vice President for Government Sales with TecAccess.

Section 508 is the amendment to the Workforce Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which was signed into law in 1998. It requires that all federal departments, agencies, contractors, and federally funded companies make their electronic and information technology accessible to people with disabilities. The law covers the development, maintenance, procurement, and use of these technologies.

Section 508 was enacted to eliminate barriers in IT, create new opportunities for people with disabilities, and encourage development of technologies that will help achieve these goals.
