Veterans with Disabilities
The Program´s Value
Military and VA hospitals have faced challenges in meeting Veterans with Disabilities´s vocational training needs. DVET provides a proven alternative -- a dynamic partnership between government and private industry that effectively benefits both the veteran and the hiring organization.
The value to a training sponsor is:
- Goodwill by demonstrating to the American public that your organization is in the forefront of addressing a significant social problem facing the nation. Regardless of their support or lack of support for the war effort, the American public overwhelmingly supports their returning service members.
- Organizations that portray themselves as pro-active participants in meeting the needs of Veterans with Disabilities will garner significant public goodwill in the near-term.
- Government programs and grants are available to defray the cost of training and employment.
- Generally, Veterans with Disabilities make extremely loyal employees. These veterans, part of the all-volunteer army, are self motivated, intelligent, and hardworking.
- Despite physical disabilities, this pool of potential employees has already demonstrated their willingness to persevere under difficult circumstances. They also have work histories and job skills that are directly applicable to many jobs.
- Organizations that portray themselves as pro-active participants benefit from direct access to the pool of trained workers that this effort will produce.
- Companies involved in Department of Defense work would find employees who know the way the military works and who would have an affinity to working with military related projects. In addition, some will have highly valued security clearances.
The value to a prospective hiring organization is:
- You will hire a known quantity with mental toughness. Veterans are highly motivated despite physical disabilities. This pool of potential employees has demonstrated a willingness to persevere under difficult circumstances.
- They also have demonstrated work histories and job skills that are directly applicable to many jobs.
- Numerous studies have shown that people with disabilities are more loyal and productive employees. They highly value their jobs and the opportunity they have been given to make a difference.
- The TecAccess program allows companies to "adapt" to the Veterans with Disabilities at the same time the Veterans with Disabilities "adapts" to the new workplace.
- Access to unique skill sets and qualifications. Returning veterans possess unique skill sets and qualifications that are difficult (or expensive) to find in the civilian population, such as current security clearances.
- The cost of developing managerial and leadership skills is also defrayed (in money and time). As a result of their military training, many returning veterans have received leadership and management training and practical experience
- Government grants and tax incentives are available to defray the costs of training and employment.
Organizations that both sponsor and hire veterans receive all of the above benefits.
The overall value to an organization participating in this program - it´s the right thing to do. Our Veterans with Disabilities have sacrificed themselves and we owe the best possible opportunities to them.
